Viola Lessons
If you are new to viola and are not sure where to start or what to do, please also read the information for beginners page.
Viola lessons are available for students ages 5 and older at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels. Please ensure that younger students are able to focus on one subject for about half an hour before enrolling them in lessons.
To clarify, "advanced" level is beneath collegiate level. At this time I am not accepting high school students who plan on majoring in viola performance in college, although I can recommend a few teachers for such students. This may change once I have earned my Master of Music degree.
Studies will include knowledge about the instrument and care for it, technique, musicality, and some basic music theory. Most students will work out of the Suzuki books (not the Suzuki Method, however) or Essential Elements books, and advanced students will be assigned music outside of method books. Other music that the student has sought out and wants to learn is always welcome, and help with music from school and other orchestras or ensembles is also appropriate.
The first lesson is scheduled on a trial basis for peace of mind. This does not mean that the lesson is free, but it does mean that I will not ask you to schedule a monthly block of lessons right away or pressure you to come back (please read my entire lesson policy for full details). I encourage students to find a comfortable student/teacher relationship, as not every teacher is best matched with every student, so I will leave scheduling the next lesson up to you.
Most students learn best with one lesson every week, but one lesson every other week is also a popular option. Lessons are held at my home in the Uptown neighborhood of Minneapolis and are available in the following time blocks for the specified amount:
half hour - $20
45 minutes - $30
hour - $40
Please contact me if you have any questions or would like to set up a lesson. I look forward to hearing from you!
