Wow, I'm pretty sure I'm going to fail at this BEDA thing

... but I'm trying.

Rehearsal for the show at Bedlam Theater went really well tonight - we worked a lot on one of the songs, did a read-through, and worked on blocking. I really think it will be a great show, and things are starting to come together! Come see us if you can (more info in the link above).

I have a lot of projects lined up during the next month, not all of which I can talk about yet. Involves recording for a local rising pop artist, songs for part of a film soundtrack, an arrangement, wedding gigs, this show at Bedlam, and a transcription.

Okay, back to work now! Ta!

Trademarks

Okay, I know I am supposed to talk to you guys about copyright some more, but I was looking up Trademarks today.

I don't have anything that I can tell you about them (because I know pretty much nothing about trademark laws) except that they are REALLY FREAKING EXPENSIVE. Seriously.

I'd like to trademark a couple of things - a publishing name (when I finally pick one and start legitimately self-publishing my music) and my "band" name (I'm working on a pop music project which you can learn more about here.

Unfortunately, trademarks cost $275-$325 PER CLASS. That means that if you want to register a trademark in more than one class, the cost multiplies. Seriously.

Making Music Work #2

Today was the second and final day of "Making Music Work", a conference put on by the American Composers Forum.

Lectures included the subjects of residencies, recordings, and copyright.

Copyright seems like a very tricky thing, but it's not quite so difficult. It's the contracts and deals you make because of copyright that seem, to me, to be the tricky parts.

I'd like to write more about this, and about fair use.

So let's start with the very basics - what rights do you have as a copyright holder? (I'm going to assume for now that you all know what things you can copyright and how it's done)

You have six rights:

1) The right to reproduce the work (whether physical, digital, or futuristically otherwise)
2) The right to create derivative works

Making Music Work

Today I attended the first day of "Making Music Work", a weekend conference put on by the American Composers Forum (ACF). The day included sessions on tax challenges associated with being an independent artist, applying to grants and fellowships, self-promotion, and community engagement. In typical ACF style, the evening concluded with a salon concert of new music.

BEDA #2

As promised, here is my second post!

There's something I haven't been telling you and really should - I'm currently writing music for a show over at Bedlam Theater. It's called Come to Dada, is about 45 minutes long, and the text is written and assembled by John Bueche. I say "written and assembled" because parts are written by John while others are assembled from the "I Dream of Dada" dream blog.

The show runs from April 17th-May 2nd, at 8pm on Thursdays-Saturdays and 7pm on Sundays.

But what is it, you ask?
